People ask all the time how to work their core and get that amazing six pack that everyone wants for summer time. One exercise that is very effective for not only your core but your ENTIRE body is the plank. Work your shoulders, core, quads and glutes to stabilize your whole body all in this one quick exercise!
How to do it –
In the plank, you place your hands under your shoulders and palms flat on the floor. Ground your toes, squeeze your glutes and quads tight while also bracing your core. Remember: spine alignment is super important!! – so watch your neck to make sure it is neutral with your spine and not hanging low. To give you a simple image – your body should look like a plank of wood… tight and straight.
Beginner? Not to worry! An option that would be great for you to start gaining more strength would be to drop your knees to the ground. This will lower the weight load until you are ready to hold your full body weight.
Once in position, try to hold your plank for 30 seconds. The next day you do the exercise, try to increase the seconds to see how long you can hold your plank. Helpful hint: set your goal before you begin of how many seconds you’d like to accomplish and set a timer. This way you are hopefully able to combat your mind telling you to stop sooner!
Fun Fact About My Family: Sometimes we have household planking competitions and my kids LOVE seeing who can hold the move the longest before bed. My daughter (also the youngest!) usually wins this one, as a gymnast, but my boys sure do put up a good fight. You could say have we have a slightly competitive household!
Overall the plank is a great foundation move and when mastered can help build great stability and strength in the core… all leading to the body of your dreams! Give it a try!
