We are all guilty of it… scouring Pinterest, TheBump, & other helpful sites in hopes of finding the answer to a looming question while pregnant and NESTING…. What does my baby ACTUALLY NEED?? Well, the answer is simple… there is no definitive answer. Every child is different and what every parent finds necessary is totally different. However, while I enter into my 3rd trimester & begin the “nesting” stage of pregnancy, I can endorse that, according to my first born angel girl, these products are 100%, totally necessary.
- Crib (I know… duh, Laura)
Now, when we had my first born, I thought it was completely necessary to get a 4-in-1 crib from BuyBuyBaby. While these are completely convenient over the years, if you’re like me you may eventually think, “man… why did we invest so much money in this? It would be fun to do something different at some point in here, like a cool lofted bed with a play area or desk beneath.” But now, that’s not an option. If you don’t think like me and alternatively prefer the long-term investment in one of these 4-in-1 beds… by all means! It’s a great idea! The only suggestion I have is to make sure you buy all of the pieces for the different extensions at once. These are known to go out of stock/brands will no longer make them & you will be out of luck!! (This happened to a family member of mine!) So make sure you stock up and have plenty of storage, because the pieces are BIG.This time around, I am going to just get a basic crib that lowers in height for the safety of my child as he grows and go from there.

I know a lot of people have a strong preference towards having a designated
- Wipe Warmer
I have one question for you… if you are used to being super warm in your mommy’s belly & then swaddled all the time and suddenly you wake up from a lovely sleep & someone starts wiping your booty with a COLD, WET wipe, wouldn’t you be upset??? Exactly. Invest in a wipe warmer, you won’t regret it. I’ve heard some will dry out your wipes, here’s the one we use & it works great!

- Comfortable Nursing Rocker (with foot rest!)
With all of the overnight feedings you endure in the first few months, a comfortable rocker is completely necessary for the nursery. Even now with my toddler, we sit and rock every night before bed, have some milk in a sippy cup, say our prayers and talk about our day. It’s just a nice cozy spot, away from everyone that we can enjoy together nightly. I’ve found it to be an important part of our routine, so I wouldn’t change that for anything! Comfort is key for the rocker, so I would recommend a wide glider with an ottoman or even a recliner. I’m looking at these for baby #2’s nursery:
If you want to be able to get anything accomplished ever, be it washing dishes, cooking dinner or even straightening up, a swing or rocker will be a godsend. We used the Fisher-Price Deluxe Auto Rock ‘n Play Sleeper with SmartConnect, pictured below, and our daughter LOVED it! It is also great for traveling to visit grandparents or even hotel stays.
Here are a couple other options that I have heard wonderful things about.
– 4moms mamaRoo 4 Bluetooth-Enabled high-tech Baby Swing – Soft, Plush Fabric with 5 Unique motions (Pricier option & less portable, but apparently amazing)
– Graco Duet Soothe Swing Rocker Winslet
- Breast Pump
If you plan to nurse, a breast pump is totally necessary and usually is largely paid for by insurance – BIG WIN! I used the Medela breast pump with travel back pack & really liked it – we were always on the go, so it was great to use wherever we were… in the car, at a wedding… wherever!
I’ve also heard quite a bit about the new Willow breast pump… still curious about this one & interested in trying it this time around. Apparently, you can use it wherever you are… I’m not sure I could sport it during a business meeting or at the grocery store, but I guess it is way quieter and much more discrete!
- Portable Crib – Pack N Play
The Pack N Play is not only great for travel, but also for setting up an easy crib area anywhere in the house. I would recommend sticking with Graco, as I’ve noticed it is the best functioning option (sometimes my husband and I time how quickly we can put it together and take it apart… I’m aware we are nerds). Also, while the baby is little, it is nice to have the option of the hanging bassinet for the top of the crib. You can find the one we use with the bassinet top here.
- Bumbo Seat
The Bumbo is not only great for helping your baby to learn how to sit up properly and gives the necessary support, we also used to use it as a place for her to sit in the action (on the large kitchen island, usually) and have a snack or play with a toy while I prepare dinner or do dishes. It was amazing! You can also get a tray to go with it.
We used the Halo Bassinet for our first born and will use it again! The vibration setting is amazing and it was so easy to have next to our bed, swiveling in and out. Also, the side bumps down to make it easier for you to get your little muffin in and out easily at night. I HIGHLY recommend this bassinet!!
- Boppy Pillow (You should really get 2!)
The Boppy Pillow that goes around your body is wonderful while you are nursing, especially if you are trying to multi-task. You can also get fun covers to change it up every now and then (also completely necessary because they will get spit up on them frequently and need to be washed)!
The Boppy Newborn Lounger is amazing for finding a spot for the baby anywhere nearby. It’s cozy & convenient! I would even bring it with me into the restroom and just set my daughter on the floor on the boppy lounger… WARNING: Motherhood removes any privacy you ever thought you had….
- Muslin Swaddlers
Having your newborn in the warmer months, especially, the muslin swaddlers were AMAZING at keeping our daughter cozy but not sweating! They come in many brands, the Aiden & Anais are the ones we find to be particularly soft!
That’s it!!! I feel like once you have these items, you will be good to go! Now just take a deep breath & nest away!
